Dehydration
Water is the best choice for proper hydration. Fruit would be the next best choice. The popular sports drinks provide hydration but the sugar and added electrolites can have undesireable side effects. Soft drinks and energy drinks are just a bad choice. Sugar actually constricts muscles and makes you thirsty. Energy drinks and sodas generally have stimulants in them which speeds up the heart, causing fatigue and faster dehydration. Fruit contains sugars but they are natural sugars that are metabolized differently with positive benefits. Make sure your players stay hydrated for their health and game performance. Symptoms of dehydration include headache, muscle cramps, visual snow, decrease in blood pressure, increased heart rate, dizziness or fainting when standing up, disorientation, dry skin, flushed skin tone, vomiting and as we've all seen on the news, death. If the kid doesn't look right, assume they need water. Treatment of dehydration - limit activity, get out of the sun and drink WATER (slowly to prevent further dehydration from vomiting) If the player is vomiting, unconcious, extremely disoriented or simply making you nervous, call 911. Water can be given to players during play from the sidelines but they can not leave the field of play and you can not bring it onto the field. If you suspect that a player is in danger of dehydration, let the referee know. NO REFEREE will refuse to allow a dehydrated player to be treated but, don't try to strategically use it as an excuse for an illegal substition. That would be inexcusible unsportsmanlike behavior.
