Drop Ball

A Drop Ball is a method of restarting play, when play is stopped for a reason not covered by other Laws of the Game. Sometimes play has to be stopped due to interference from spectators, Mother Nature, the ball pops, a dog or toddler spontaneously decides to do something on the field ... you get the picture! Sometimes the Referee may deem it necessary to stop the play due to an injury or as a preventative measure. It's really nobody's fault and you don't want to give either team an advantage by arbitrarily awarding a free kick so, a Drop Ball is implemented to give each team an equal opportunity.

The procedure for a Drop Ball is simple.

One player is chosen from each team, (similar to a jump ball or face off). From the point where play was stopped, the Referee drops the ball between them and play is started the moment the ball touches the ground.

If the ball is kicked or touches a player before it touches the ground or, if it bounces out of the field of play before a player touches it; the kick is retaken.

If the point where play was stopped was inside the Goal Area; the Drop Ball is taken at the Goal Area Line parallel to the point where play was stopped. It'd hardly be an equal opportunity if the ball were to be dropped inside the Goal Area.

Of course; it is wise to remember, don't kick each other and it is most wise not to kick your Referee.
