Goal Keepers, are like Geometry Majors. They have to figure out the angles. The goalie can use his hands anywhere in the big Penalty Area box as long as it is not directly kicked to the goalie by a team mate. In normal play, the goalie should be positioned in front of the goal - forward of the goal line to "cover the angle". Every coach has his own strategy but a good guide is to keep the goalie in between the Goal Line and the little Goal Area or Penalty box, facing the ball, between the ball and the goal. This effectively narrows the target, requiring less speed and agility to make saves. It also drastically reduces goal line rebounds and accidental goals. If the goalie is on the goal line and carries the ball across the goal line , it is a goal. When a corner kick is taken against you, a good place for the goalie is guarding the closest goal post. Often times, that position is shared with a defensive teammate. There's a lot of activity in front of that net and it's easy for the ball to squirt into the space between the goalie and the post. It's probably a good idea to have your goalie on the line for Goal Kicks or Free Kicks in the box, positioned between the ball and the goal. This is due to the shorter distance, unpredictability of these situations and the shortened time between seeing the play and reacting accordingly. Penalty kicks require the goalie to stand on the goal line until the ball is kicked.
Goal Keepers can wear gloves, headgear & protective eye ware as long as it does not pose any safety threat. Goal Keepers Jersey must be distinguishable from all Players, Referees and Linemen. Goal Keeper can not pick up a ball intentionally kicked to him by his teammate. Goal Keeper can not receive the ball with his hands directly from a Throw-In. Goal Keeper can go anywhere on the field, even score a goal but, can only use hands inside his own Penalty Area (Big Box) Goal Keeper has 6 seconds to release the ball after gaining control. Once released, Goalie can not pick up ball again until another player plays it. Goal Keeper can bounce the ball. This is called "Parrying" (I think it's French???) Goal Keepers can score a goal directly from a punt ... if they're that good!!! More to come....
